How To Avoid Getting The Red X on Twitter
There are a few red X’s down there. Wonder why? Ever heard of Nutshell Mail? It’s a neat, little tool that I use to stay on top of managing my Twitter presence, day in and day out as people start following me. Basically, Nutshell Mail delivers data on who’s followed you, some of your followers’ latest tweets and a few other bite-sized information tidbits in a very easy-to-digest email that’s customizable to your preferences. It’s a slick, little time-saver and absolutely worth a look. The screenshot you see above is from one of today’s emails for my account. You’ve probably noticed that some of the recent followers have been given the green light, whereas others sport the red letter X. You’ve guessed right. The red X folks have been voted off my personal Twitter island. My Twitter Island Call me old-fashioned, but I’m still of the 1:1 Twitter ratio mentality. That simply means that I’ll follow just about anyone who follows me, based on a few very simple criteria. I look at following back complete strangers as an opportunity to create more potential serendipity. On Twitter, you never know who might end up being your next relevant business connection or even an IRL friend. Serendipity works in strange ways. I’m a believer. But the X’s have made a poor first impression. So I move on, and don’t follow back. Want to learn how to avoid their fate? Want to learn how to make sure you get the prized green box instead of the red X? Show Me YOU Newsflash: Logos are not humans. Silly egg default graphics? Those are’t human either. Generic, little Twitter bird graphics are most definitely not human. If you are so concerned with your privacy to be hesitant about putting a picture of yourself on Twitter, you might [...]

Today, I’m very excited to welcome a guest blogger who I’ve come to enjoy reading over the past few months. Known as The Naked Redhead, Sarah Storer brings an honest and witty perspective, blended with an entertaining sense of sarcasm that keeps readers coming back to her blog. Want more? Sarah also brings the same delightful mix of humor, passion and energy to audiences as a public speaker based in Columbus, Ohio. I’m pleased to pass her the keyboard for this post… HOW TO Use Twitter to Win Friends and Influence People I have a confession to make: I am a former Twitter skeptic. I mean, I’d signed up in the beginning just like everyone else. But USING it? No. I didn’t get it. I didn’t see the appeal of millions of people squawking at each other in real time. And I definitely hated the idea of limiting myself to 140 characters (I like to get VERBOSE, mkay?). But all the “experts” were using it, so I thought, “Why not?” Unsurprisingly, I did everything wrong…at first. Initially, I thought that Twitter was a good way to market my blog. Accordingly, I set up one of those auto-tweet thingies to get people to read my latest posts. Some referrals trickled in. I then decided to add personalized tweets about my blog to the auto-tweets. The results for those were a little better, but I still wasn’t seeing encouraging results (in terms of numbers). That’s when I had my big revelation – the one that every self-starter goes through. The simplest thing in the world – that only about 2% of people trying to “make it” in the Interwebosphere understands – when it comes to social media is this: It’s not about me. That one, little phrase changed absolutely everything – and I [...]
