Why Mac OSX Lion is So Cool – And Why You Shouldn’t Install It Just Yet
Hi there. I’m pleased to give the floor to Mike Castaldi today because he’s going to share some important things that Mac users ought to consider before running to Apple.com and downloading the new Mac OSX Lion. Mike’s company Wildfrog Consulting helps small businesses build their systems and keep them running smoothly. This post was in part, a conversation we had while I was in his office in Columbus getting some work done on my new Macbook Pro. And don’t think this was a freebie for a guest post either. I wrote Mike a check and then asked him to guest post because he knows his stuff. If you’re in Columbus and looking for Mac support, I suggest reaching out to Mike on Twitter. He’s one of the cool kids in the sandbox. Without further ado, here’s Mike… Why Mac OSX Lion is So Cool – And Why You Shouldn’t Install It Just Yet Yesterday, Apple released the much-anticipated update to the Mac operating system – v10.7 Lion. It’s packed with a lot of great new features. Mission Control and Launchpad give you a whole new way of looking at your applications, documents and workflow. Autosave and Versions build on Time Machine’s backup functionality, helping to cover you if an application crashes. The list goes on and on. But even with all the cool new stuff, I’m recommending that my clients hold off — for now. Normally, I’ll upgrade right away — so that I can find potholes and advise my clients accordingly. But I can’t do that this time. With any new operating system, making sure your current applications work (properly) is critical. For me, I have to hold off on Lion because Intuit has chosen not to make Quickbooks 2009 (or 2010) compatible with Lion. Considering it’s my accounting package, [...]

I’ll start by being honest myself — I don’t really like that a lot of people are giving Chris Brogan shit for building out a training webinar on Google Plus. I mean really, folks. What’s up with some groups of people always having their panties in a bunch every time someone wants to try and cash in on the online presence they’ve spent years building through sharing information, building trust, attention and traffic. The last time I checked, it was A-okay to use the web to generate and honest buck, right? Why Brogan’s Webinar is a Killer Content Marketing Case Study For reference, here’s that link again. Hell, even though I’ve been exploring on my own and writing about my own experiences, ideas and hacks on Google Plus, I still might attend. Chris is one of the few hundred of us digerati folks who’s been bedside to witness the birth of most of most of the social properties we all use today, right? Chances are, he’s going to see some stuff that we both might have overlooked. Maybe we’ll see some stuff he has as well. If anything, his webinar will be a great discussion on Google Plus. But, his how he is selling the webinar and the information he will share is absolutely a killer case study in content marketing execution. Consider his approach to the landing page: Title for the site: [<title> Learn Google+ For Business and Networking</title>]. Hello search engines. I’m here, and for this specific purpose. Well played. Opening video: It’s personal, quickly produced, leverages his ability as a speaker who can deliver info in one take, and the video is about 1 minute long which is about the length that matches what users will consume on this type of site. That said, I wonder what the whole $.010 veggies thing is in the background. Chris [...]

I like putting things in buckets. Not so much the buckets in the literal sense, unless it’s good beer on a hot day and the bucket is located on my patio and filled with ice. That’s a bucket for the win. Nope. I mean buckets in the sense of organization. If you’ve been playing around in Google Plus this week and checking out some of my other posts, you’ll know that in Google’s social network, the buckets are called Circles. Google Plus Circles Power User Control For one of the first times in the history of the age of social networks, users have what appears to be near complete control over their information, what content they see and how the use a news feed. It’s almost like Google’s engineers had a lunch date with Doc Searls and took the advice he gave Facebook to heart. But with power comes great responsibility, and with responsibility comes work. Let me ask you this — how much work have you put into organizing your circles? Have you been making it a practice to reciprocate when Google Plus folks add you to one of their circles? Or, are you looking at Google Plus differently than the behemoths like Facebook and Twitter that came before it? Have you ticked anyone off because you haven’t added them to a circle yet? Hacking Reciprocity in Google Plus Back to buckets and circles. As of now, there’s no limit to how many Google Plus Circles you can create. Further more, there’s no limit to the amount of people you can place in those circles. As least as far as we know. With that in mind, the intentions of each circle can be completely customized. With the right organization, you can design specific Google Plus Circles as holding buckets from which you can move users [...]
