Quiet Balance

I owe you and all the rest of my readers an explanation. Same for you folks who follow me on Twitter and Facebook and LinkedIn. This post is that explanation.  The funny thing is – Chris’s post this morning on Running Til You Fail pretty much did it for me. That’s one of the reasons I read his blog every day. Somehow, his words seem speak to me at just the right time. In the last weeks, I’ve failed. I was running so hard, chasing accounts, preparing for The Ohio Growth Summit and working through a dense few weeks of speaking that I started to neglect everything else.  I started to neglect Sarah, and my kids and my responsibilities at home. I ran right past my family and my own desire to stay in good physical shape. I ran so fast I didn’t even notice the sad expressions on the faces of the people I love the most. I’ve failed. In Failure For the sake of my own relationships and my sanity, I stayed offline for most of last week. I didn’t write to you here. I didn’t tweet much. I stayed off Facebook. I did work because I had made commitments. I spent some time with the students and faculty at Ohio University’s Schey Sales Centre because the students work so hard and earned my time. But for the most part, I stopped.  As a mater of fact, I stopped completely this past weekend on a sort of self-imposed period of media deprivation. On Friday, I spent time at home, talking through priorities with Sarah and planning for the next few with all the changes that will be taking place in my family.  I’m lucky to have someone so grounded in reality who cares for me the way she does. On Saturday, we went [...]

Media Artwork For Dads

My dude, Nate Marshall, sent me something that is absolutely worth talking about. He’s one of the many talented students I get to work with down at the Ohio University Schey Sales Centre. I think you’ll dig the video below from Jean P. Amir’s Song has a wonderful message and dads everywhere should pay special attention to the lyrics. As an up-and-coming hip-hop artist, I’m pretty sure that Jean will one day be a very rich man.   Nate and his friends at creMedia produced what you are about to watch using Canon D60′s and T2i’s. They used three different pieces of glass: 17-40mm f/4 50mm f/1.4 70-300m f/4 But the equipment is only as effective as the person holding it. The creMedia guys are skilled artists too. In between classes, exams and the Athens social life, they are creating art and building a business. Watch this intriguing short film on their blog, entitled Longing for Claire. It’s got all the makings of a classic Twilight Zone film but with a modern twist. Need video work done? You should talk to them. As for John P.? Well, both of my own boys jumped up on my lap when I was playing his video this morning. You should watch it too… nateriggsLike what you just read and want to get my posts delivered to your inbox? How to Gain Trust

Trust is an important element of every relationship. It’s not found in the guts of a proposal or a signed contract or by using crafty (and expensive) ”legal-ese.” It’s not bought or sold, and it’s not easy. For me, trust is a connection between humans that’s established over time. I think you and I build those connections with little deposits of emotional labor. If we work to help the people around us without expecting anything in return, those people start to trust us. Whoa. Ask nothing in return? That last part sounds hard… It is. Truly expecting nothing in return requires that we ourselves trust in other humans. It requires that we believe that some day, someone else will help us when we need it (and probably least expect it). It means that we can’t always stick with the old “I’ll scratch you back if you scratch mine” mindset. It means we just do. How to Gain Trust Want to know the secret to gaining trust? Be willing to give your trust to other people first.
