In this week’s episode of The Social Restaurant Podcast, I welcome Matt Thompson, the CEO and Cofounder of ShiftNote.
Matt is a restaurant industry-lifer, having spent the majority of his career opening new locations for brands like Rain Forrest Cafe, J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks and Houlihan’s. He’s also spent time supporting local restaurant operators as a consulting resource for Sysco.
In 2002, Matt and a team of fellow restaurant managers saw an opportunity to use technology to improve operations functions like employee scheduling, shift-to-shift communications and reporting on staffing trends.
These guys were, and are still literally scattered across the country. Yet, they’ve been able to successfully launch this start up and start to change the way their clients run their concepts. Make sure to listen towards the end of the show when Matt shares just how they’ve been able to accomplish all of that.
What You’ll Learn
- Why are restaurants still using paper shift log books and why Matt thinks that the industry is well overdue for a shift in employee scheduling software.
- Commentary on Anthony Bourdain’s book, Kitchen Confidential and the realities of the controlled chaos that can ensue in the front and back of the house.
- You’ll hear Matt talk about how data mining your shift-to-shift communications can actually help managers and operators plan staffing more effectively, year over year. You’ll also hear my utter shock as to why adopting apps for all of this stuff hasn’t become the industry standard (just yet…).
You can find out more about Matt’s company, and even talk with the Shiftnote folks one their Facebook page. Leave their marketing director Audrey a message on the page, and I’m sure she’ll be happy to send you some cool sunglasses for your kids. Get the sunglasses >>
