Location-Based Marketing: 5 Critical Lessons from Last Night’s Retail Experience
Sarah and I are watching the skies for storks ready to drop dancing peanuts any day now. So last night, we made a trip to one of our local Babies R Us locations in order to cash in a few gift cards we’ev received from family and friends. Since I’m a internwebz geek, I’ve gotten used to checking into retail locations on apps like Foursquare, Yelp and Facebook Places. The chance of finding a hidden deal or discount is exciting enough to keep that habit in the top of my mind Finding Location-Based Treasures As I checked into the store on Foursquare, I was immediately rewarded with a digital coupon for $25 off of a $100 purchase of clothes, shoes or accessories. Win! And, being that we had lots of baby accessories to buy, we were delighted to dig up this little location-based treasure. To our disappointment, the deal was bunk and we never received our $25 discount as promised. First, the polite older lady at the checkout had never seen a customer bring in this type of deal to the counter, and frankly had absolutely no idea what Foursquare was. She did believe us though, as I was able to show her the date, address of the exact Babies R Us location we were standing in and the promise of the offer. What she couldn’t figure out was how to actually enter the deal into the cash register. And so, we waited for reinforcements… Consulting With the Store Manager After a few minutes we were greeted by the store manager. She curiously looked at the deal on my phone, puzzled in the same way the checkout clerk was. Once again, the manager had never seen this type of coupon before, but didn’t debate the legitimacy of the deal in that all the information was correct. I smiled, and explained to her [...]
Read This PostThe Thing About Viral Video Marketing
I hear that a lot from the clients I meet with. “We just want our stuff to go viral. We want everyone to watch our videos on YouTube and tell all their friends about them. You can help us do that, right?” Umm. Maybe. It depends on attitude and how much your willing to be … uncomfortable. What Goes Viral The funny thing about that statement, is nobody really knows the answer to that. And, if they say they do, grill the hell out of them and have them explain it to you and take copious notes. Because when their done, I’d really live for you to email me the secret sauce. Chances are more likely that it’sa bunch of sales BS. For fun, here’s a few recent examples of what actually goes viral: Viral Video Marketing Case 1 — Ape with AK47 Genius move (and an extremely lucky find) by Fox to promote the new movie, Rise of the Planet Apes that’s due in theaters this week. Nearly 12 million views and counting. I’m pretty sure that it’s genuine too in that There’s really no way you could fake this — especially the moment of silence when the soliders realize that they’ve just done something incredibly stupid, and scatter. Ape victorious. Viral Video Marketing Case 2 — 2D Photography Rube Goldberg OK. Go. No really. The whole Rube Goldberg thing isn’t new at all, but it hasn’t lost it’s luster. The idea was re-popularized by the viral sensation band, OK Go in their “This Too Shall Pass” video over a year ago. That video sits at nearly 30 million views today, while the one you see below is just over 2 million views at the time of this post. Still, it’s a damn good copy-cat concept and hats off to the 2D folks [...]

Welcome to this week’s edition of Blogging Style Critiques. Before we get started, I wanted to bounce an idea off of you that came from Zelko Kecman over at Microsoft by means of a Google Plus conversation. Zelko suggested that a Google Plus hangout might be a good way to have a Q&A style weekly get together on the topic of blogging styles where we could dig into critiquing posts and disucssion the topic in a mastermind group fashion. As The Naked Redhead would say: “Score!” If you’d please look over to the sidebar, I’ve created a quick poll so that I can get your feedback on Zelko’s idea. Would you help me by sharing your opinion there? Remember that if you’d like to stay in the loop on my blogging styles book, sign up here. Doing that will help me keep you in the loop on promotions, upcoming style workshops, and how and when you can get a free copy. As always, I promise to respect your privacy.
