Sleeping Bags with Sleeves and the Path of Least Resistance

With the unfortunate death of Steve Jobs earlier this week, I’ve been thinking a lot about inovation. Steve was a great innovator. We really only see folks like him who share the vision, passion and charisma to build innovations that change entire industries once in a great while. Steve’s up there with Alexander Gram Bell, Henry Ford, Walt Disney on my list. Sleeping Bags with Sleeves Not all innovation has to be as complex as iPads. It took apple millions of dollars and perhaps thousands of lives to follow the path to that amazing innovation. Don’t get me wrong — I love, love, love the flashy tech stuff like iPads. But, I also love the sleep sack. So does Max, and so does Sarah. Win. Sleep sacks are essentially sleeping bags with sleeves for babies.  The adult version of this amazingly helpful innovation has been branded as Sunggies, and as the Christmas creeps closer, you’ll soon be able to buy them just about everywhere … again. But you know what? At 3AM in the morning when it’s time for a diaper change, the sleep sacks we put Max in might be one of the best innovations ever … for sleep weary parents, that is! With one zip, Max’s diaper is easily accessible. No fussing with buttons in the dark or trying to each of his kicking legs in their proper place. Competitors like the long sleeved ‘onsey’ or pajamas with feet take don’t hold a candle to the sleep sack. Better Than Blankets Who would have thought that a small bag with a zipper could improve the quality if life for parents at 3AM in the morning. Cutting edge?  No. But does it work?  Beautifully! So how did we get to the sleep sack and Snuggies? I’m willing to bet that at one time, a mom somewhere in [...]

5 Quick Guesses for Future of Google’s Business

We’re a little over 2 months into a world with Google Plus, and as expected, some of the buzz has died down. The early adopters have been testing and looking at analytics from what impact G+ is having on our other web properties. Influencers have launched webinars to capitalize on the opportunity to help onboard new users. Like it or not, there’s even a book that will be published soon on how to use Google Plus for business. As we settle in and really start to get used to using the new set of tools Google has given the world, I can’t help but want to look into the future… Click here to see the video, if you can’t already. Now that you’re in the mood for crystal balls, let’s make a few guesses as to where Google is going as a company and how Google Plus fits into the plan. Here’s five of mine, and I’d love to hear a few of yours in the comments. Google Plus will continue towards deeper integration with everything else Google. In the next 12 months I think we’ll see things like docs, calendar, analytics and trends merge into Google Plus so that dispersed teams can conduct better online meetings. Google will begin to pose a threat to online companies like 37 Signals, ZoHo and other SaaS project management tools as a result of this integration. As more and more virtual companies begin to form and take advantages of the benefits of keeping overhead low, the need for more powerful and easier to use project management software will grow. I think we will see some form of Google Wave reemerge from inside the Google Plus layer. Google will change the webinar landscape. As deeper integration grows with Google Plus, clunky products like WebEx and GoTo Meeting (and they are clunky to use) could [...]
