Do You Need to Diversify Your Income Sources?

The 1950’s Equation for Success: Get through school Go to college Get a decent-paying job Get married Buy a house Have beautiful children Retire on your company’s dime Live happily ever after The 21st Century’s Equation for Success: Get through school, based on a seriously outdated curriculum adopted during the industrial time period that is mostly irrelevant to the digital age Get through college, preferably without selling one of your kidneys or becoming so riddled with student loan debt that you have to spend the next 30 years digging yourself out Wait, next is the really fun part… Find a job with a large company, where you’ll likely become expendable very quickly as your job function moves oversees to a more skilled job force that accepts much lower wages than you Apply for 1,000 jobs within your field and get two phone interviews over a six-month period. Frantically try to figure out how to get trained for your next career move even though you have no income to pay for training Come to your senses, and work on diversifying your income sources Okay. Antidote – What are your customers saying and what do they really want? Poison 5 – Numbers. Antidote – Dazzle. Don’t make it boring. What are you trying to prove? What should we do differently? Poison 6 – Twitter and Facebook. So huge and so dominant. Antidote – Think bigger: blog, SEO, social media home base, lead generation, analytics. Poison 7 – Employees. Antidote – Unleash the power of your employees. Poison 8 – Lawyers. Antidote – Balance risk and rewards and build relationships with your legal team. Poison 9 – Contests.
