Questions On Our Maps

Marketers often call me and want to learn about how things like Facebook and blogs can help their organization. I usually respond to their question with another question:  ”What are you trying to achieve?” Sometimes, I think that response frustrates the folks on the other end.  That’s completely understandable.  Focusing on shiny technology and buzzwords is easier and usually more fun.  However, answering that question is mission-critical to seeing a return from any efforts using social media, the Interwebz or any new technology. I’m writing this halfway between Baltimore, MD and Hartford, CT.  Tomorrow, Mike and I will begin some onsite work with our friends at The Pert Group (client), building out a collaborative blog team.  They’ll be using InnoBlogs as the platform (a very nice piece of technology that Tom Williams has been working on). Before we even open the software, we’ll walk them through a series of facilitated exercises to help develop content ideas, conversion points, strategic groups, categories and tag structures. One of them is the map that you see below: Notice there are only four questions.  Pretty easy, right? When was the last time you stopped and answered each of these questions regarding how your business is using social media? nateriggsI advise mid-sized & large organizations on how to adopt and use social media to market through organizational culture and better serve their clients.
