nate-riggsThere are quite a few reasons why I’m delighted to have Cheryl Harrison on board at Social Business Strategies.  She’s a whiz kid at learning systems, learning how to game them and applying tools and bending rules to get to her objectives.

In her post today – on the power of saying “thank you” - Cheryl used Google Voice to embed an audio message and prove a point.  It was super easy.

Google Voice is a great tool.  And with any new shiny tool, there’s still an open door in terms of figuring out how to use it to achieve your content marketing objectives.

I Listen to Video

While video is important in blogging for a ton of reasons, I notice that when I encounter video interviews on blogs, I rarely ever watch the entire video.

Rather, I listen to the audio content while tabbing through screens and completing other work.  Multitasking is essential to my work day and the audio content is really where the value is, right?

Shel Holtz figured this out a while ago with his FIR Podcast.  He publishes the audio stream to his blog each week and has quite the listener base.

Using Google Voice you can embrace this same idea on your blog.  It’s free.  It’s easy.  It’s fast.

You with me?

HOW TO Use Google Voice for Easy Podcasting on Your Blog

  1. Find someone who’s interesting to you, your readers or your customers.  Here are some interview tips you can use to make it a good one.
  2. If you don’t already have one, set up a Google Voice account.  It’s free and takes about 15 seconds.
  3. Ask your interviewee to call you on your Google Voice number.  It will connect directly to your mobile or desk line.  (Note: It seems that Google Voice call recording only works with inbound calls.  Google, will you please fix this?)
  4. Once you’re connected, press #4.  You will hear an audible confirmation that the call is now being recorded.  You can start recording at any time during the call.
  5. Go ahead and conduct your phone interview.  When finished, simply press #4 again to stop the recording or just hang up the call.
  6. Now, go to your Google Voice account and listen to your recorded call.  Click on “more” and use the drop-down to copy the embed code.google-voice
  7. Go to your blog, open the HTML editor and paste in the embed code for your recorded call.
  8. Publish your post.

It will look something like what you see below.  Hat tip to my buddy, Jason Velliquette, for participating in my example.

How else could you use Google Voice for your business?

Nate – You've been after me to do video (which I'm reluctant to do), but this is something that would be great to try. Thanks for the idea!

very neat trick. I've often wanted to do this with skype but it always turns out to be very painful. This might work as long as you don't have to edit. Unless you can export. Wonder if that's possible?

I’m going to be trying things out too. Keep me in the loop and let’s figure out some stuff together. :)

Good question. I think you would have to play it, rerecord it with iMovie or something and then edit. Unless you can somehow extract from the embed code? Is there a tool?
