Most people are surprised when they learn I love listening to bluegrass music.

I guess it’s something about the speedy melodies and thick harmonies that rings with me.  I dig the culture, too. Following bluegrass, jam bands and festivals comes with a certain set of community guidelines.  While there are no formal rules, people tend to respect each other, stay friendly and enjoy celebrating the music in vast company.

About three weeks ago, I had the chance to once again experience the music.

In a group about 19 strong, we made our way to the Yonder Mountain String Band show at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.  All of us fans.  All of us friends.  All of us together, finding release through our love of the music.  While sipping a bourbon at the balcony bar, I noticed my friends and fellow entrepreneurs Joe Bilyk, of Luna Studios, and Matt Dopkiss, of Dynamit.  They, too, were finding release, and it was great to find a commonality that I wasn’t aware of before.

Finding Release
Over the past few weeks, the show and conversation has reminded me about the importance of finding release.  The word finding is used intentionally because I know now that we must be proactive in our mindset and efforts to break.  To stop.  To release.

Amidst the duties of running a small business, being a dad of two, and all the other crazy demands that come with being a driven twenty-something, I find that music and live shows help me get back to the place where the workload lifts, even if only for a few hours.  Those few hours are enough.

What do you do to find release?  What is it that gives you a few hours to lift your burdens?

[Ladies and gentleman, please enjoy just a small taste of Yonder Mountain String Band from this year's show at the LC.]

Living in Chicago, my release is oil painting – nature landscapes on canvas. Get’s my mind out of the city and back to nature. Doing so takes a good chunk of time, so when I need a ‘quick-fix’, I’ll sit at my bench and tie flies for flyfishing. Works every time!

@Nick – definitely seems like a good outlet. I wish I could sit still that long!
