50 People You Should Follow Before the Ball Drops This Friday

Don’t judge me when I admit this, but I don’t really ever participate in Follow Friday tweets.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m always appreciative of the people who include me in their mentions, and I try to reach out and, at the very least, say thank you. But with this being the last Follow Friday of 2010, I wanted to do something fun. Over the course of this year, I’ve gotten to know so many cool and interesting people, that I want to introduce you to as many as I can.  Heck, I could have spent days writing this post with numbers in the hundreds.  Unfortunately, I had to draw the line somewhere. This is a list of 50 people I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know – in some way – over the course of 2010.  I’m appreciative of each and every one of you. The Catch-on Follow There are many ways to follow.  That’s the catch.  Not all of the links you will see below go to Twitter accounts.  I’ve mixed in blogs, flickr accounts and Facebook profiles.  Why?  I’ve shared how I most regularly follow each user myself. It’s a longer list, so I wanted to see if I could limit the shout-out to exactly ten words.  Make the connection yet?  And remember, the numbers are in no way a ranked order.  It’s just an indication of who popped in my head as I came up with the list.  Okay? 50 People You Should Follow Before the Ball Drops This Friday Sam Falletta – Incept’s leader (client), operations guru, creator of conversational marketing centers Tom Williams – founder of InnoBlogs, a collaborative blogging platform, Columbus-based entrepreneur Mike Whaling – consultant at 30Lines, multi-family housing industry expert, co-founder of #aptchat Heather Whaling – president of Genben Communications, PR 2.0 rising [...]

20 Posts I Loved Writing in 2010

Everyone this week seems to be focused on the wrap-up party for 2010.  I’ve never been one to shy away from a party, so count me in. Gini Detrich’s end-of-year post on Spin Sucks is probably one of the coolest I’ve read so far this year.  She does a nice job ranking the top-10 posts of 2010 by the amount of comments they receive. My Take on The End It’s was a good exercise for me to walk back through the last year of writing.  It’s helped me get laser-focused for next year and also brought back some good memories. I’m a bit selfish, I guess.  I’ve selected my top-20 by looking at comments, shares and a little traffic stats – but, mostly, these are the posts that I loved writing.  Fair? 20 Posts I Loved Writing in 2010 What We Can Learn About Trust & Brand from DK Diner – I wrote this back in January of this year.  Along with having killer doughnuts, DK Diner knows how to create a customer experience that makes you feel right at home – pajamas and all. How To Use Google Wave to Get More from Events & Conferences – What ever happened to Google Wave?  Well, it’s still there, but mostly off-radar today.  Wasn’t it supposed to be Google’s next big thing?  At any rate, this was another January post and an idea that worked pretty well. 23 Ideas to Help WNCI’s Morning Zoo with Dave & Jimmy Get Better at Using Social Media - Apparently, January was an “on” month.  This list of ideas got your attention, as well as the attention of the Ohio Center for Broadcasting.  Pretty cool. HOW TO Use a Foursquare Strategy for Customer Retention & Foot Traffic – Funny how my opinion on Foursquare has changed with the birth of Facebook [...]

Michael Vick’s Brand and Media Ripples

Michael Vick is quite controversial these days.  His return to the NFL after time served, and his subsequent re-rise to fame as the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles has people talking. It’s interesting that Vick’s story – and his history in dogfighting – was one of the first topics I ever wrote about on this blog.  For those who don’t know, I’m very much against dogfighting.  It’s a disgusting and dangerous criminal act, and the punishments should be more severe than they are.  But that’s my opinion. Vick seems to be genuine in making a turnaround.  The proof will always be in the long-term pudding, but so far, so good.  Aside from last night’s 24-14 loss to Minnesota, he’s playing well and keeping out of trouble.  President Obama had reportedly even placed a call in support of Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, praising his decision to give Vick a second chance at taking snaps. Media Cycles and Brand Vick is a brand in the re-making.  It will still be a long time before his armor is free from dents, dings and tarnish.  In fact, because of the new internet conversation cycle for brands, his brand may never be fully restored. Below is an example of what I mean.  This segment was broadcast within the last 12 hours on Fox News (television).  The shortened clip (a media object) was posted on YouTube today.  Things happen pretty fast in the media – all media. If you can’t see the video, click here. [Side Note: I can't help but find the irony a bit funny when Tucker Carlson states that he's a Christian shortly after calling for Vick's execution.  Yep.  He's kind of a d-bag.] Obviously, strong and controversial statements – like that one – get attention and comments.  Here’s what Google showed me this morning as to what was happening in real time: [...]
