Creativity is a loose term. In the advertising agency world, we think of “creatives” as graphic designers or even brand strategists or copy writers. Musicians are creative. Painters and sculptors are seen as being creative. I get the feeling that most people think creativity must be tied to a being an artist of some sorts.
But not everyone is meant to show their creativity through artwork or writing or music. Creativity is a mindset and a process – not just an artistic skill set, and us business folks are, and MUST be, creative as well. Businesses survive on being creative. Without creativity, we would all be providing the same products and services, and frankly, that would get boring really quick.
Mark Henson, the owner of Sparkspace is a really creative guy. He uses a brick and mortar building as his canvas.  Marks created a meeting space and what’s more, has made a complete business around his concept. Mark designed Sparkspace to foster creativity in and among the groups of people that meet there. It’s a colorful and refreshing break from the vanilla box conference rooms and cube cities of the corporate world.
Mark was kind enough to give me a few minutes of his time. His story is worth watching.
You can be creative too. The question is, what canvas will you choose?
